After lands (the song) (2025)
After Lands (the song) (2025) is a performance reflecting on my Caribbean background and relationship with my mother. Inspired by Nayirrah Waheed’s poem, land, from her collection of poems, Salt, this specially commissioned performance opened the group exhibition, Las Palabras, curated by Natalia Valencia Arango at Somers Gallery, London. Using white chalk, I begin drawing the outline of Dispersal V – IV – VII (2025) on the ground outside the gallery as my mother speaks to me about our time in the Caribbean with our family. My mother starts to talk to me about knitting, her technique, why she likes knitting, who taught her, what she likes to make. Inside the gallery I trace the outline of my print on the gallery floor, and then up into space. My mother speaks about art, painting, and drawing. I start tracing pictures of memories with my finger. I move slowly through the gallery performing movements extrapolated from the choreography of the knitting technique my mother uses. Approaching the gallery context as site, I envelope myself, the audience, and artworks in a maternal aural landscape.
