Glow home 2024
Glow Home is a permanent public artwork for Beckton Globe Library designed in collaboration with communities living and working in Newham. The collection of five neon and timber sculptures explore light, text, and public space. Glow home takes inspiration from Glenn Ligon’s Untitled (Bruise/Blues) (2014), Tracey Emin’s I want my time with you (2018), and Nanda Vigo’s Lo zoo di Enzo (2020), the light installation designed for Enzo Mari. Influencing the commission was Mari’s philosophy of learning by doing which was expanded into a facilitated socially engaged design process involving communities at the Globe.

Meeting regularly with Forever Young, Knit and Natter, Lego Club, and library staff, learning about their experiences and what these communities valued about Beckton Globe, everyone was invited to share their reflections by drawing and writing using soft pastel and paper. This practice gave people the opportunity to imagine the kind of luminosity that the public artwork might take, and these drawings were used to design the final artwork.

The final designs were created to show people outside passing by what Beckton Globe Library means to the people who use it, to attract and invite people to visit, and to have a positive impact in the environment shining a light on collective and individual experiences within the local community. Made by hand from reclaimed timber and energy efficient RGB neon each design is a symbol, affirmation and wish for the growing communities in and around Beckton Globe Library.
